A side draw off the main drainage of the EOD area (Explosive Ordinance Demolition) of Fort Sill Military Reservation. This high box canyon holds water intermittenly although rock pools collect water from seeps long after rains have the creeklets funning.

EOD site, West Range, Fort Sill M.R., Comanche County, OK. Specifically, a side ravine of the main canyon above the first narrows from the explosive ordinance demolition site.
Specimen Notes:
Shortly after noon in 103 deg F heat, sighted specimen cruising back and forth along 30 meter length of a drainage punctuated by a series of rock pools. Pools were up to a foot deep with gravely mud bottoms ... enough to attract crayfish. Drainage was narrow (up to 3 meters wide) with 3-5 meter high rock walls. Pool size where photographed was roughly 2 meters wide by 3 in length. This was the lone individual seen. This box canyon, off limits to the public but for my one day a year inspection of Black-capped Vireo territories, is an especially arid and rocky portion of the Wichita Mtns. The avifauna is more western in character with an abundance of Rock Wrens and the occasional Lesser Goldfinch and territorial Swainson's Hawk. A Great Spreadwing and Dusky Dancer were identified (photos) at this same rock pool.

West Range, Fort Sill M.R., Comanche County, OK. Specifically, that portion of Blue Beaver Creek crossing at the jct. of Blue Beaver Valley and LETRA roads.
Specimen Notes:
Blue Beaver Creek is a locally significant drainage of the eastern extension of the Wichita Mtns. It is an intermittent stream prone to flooding. On the date of observation, the region had been in one of the most extreme droughts records since the 1930s'. July proved to be the 2nd warmest for the state of Oklahoma (1936 and 1934 being one and three). At the specific site of the observation, there remained one of only 3 known pools along a 6 mile length being surveyed for riparian birds. It was the longest and deepest (roughly 20 meters long and 1 meter deep). The creek is heavily shaded along its length on Fort Sill with an oak and cottonwood eastern forest mix. Barred owls, Louisiana Waterthrushes, and Red-shouldered Hawks extend there range west here. The individual photographed was first found the day before and a poor image obtained. On the day of the photographed presented here, it was late evening, sun having set behind the mtns. The individual was content to remain just downstream of the main pool where the area was rapidly drying out. It allow close approach (1m), but was not lethargic and could disappear quickly at any closing of the distance.In the immediate vicinity were Blue Dashers, Slaty Skimmers, and Vesper Bluets.

small pond along N side of MacKenzie Hill just east of Twin Gates on West Range, Fort Sill M.R. and just west of Anetenna Hill. One of very few ponds with any water (and this was mostly dry).
